THE importance of tourism to the Irish economy and its role as a major employer was stressed at the Let’s Talk Tourism forum in Killarney by Irish Hotels Industry chief executive Tim Fenn.
He said there are 230,000 people with jobs supported by tourism and the positions range from highly qualified managers, accountants, chefs and marketing professionals to young people “looking for a start” in the industry.
“There are so many opportunities for young people instead of them being herded into the dysfunctional sheep pen system and ending up where they don’t want to go.
“We look after our staff, we look after their careers and we give them the best opportunities in life,” Mr Fenn said.
“We wouldn’t have over 200,000 people working in our industry if we weren’t doing something right,” he added.
